through

International Phonetic Alphabet

A unique crash course
on learning English as a second language

 with a focus on rectifying
common flaws of locally (Hong Kong) spoken English

and a promise of
a new insight into language learning
and
an experience you probably never had

This course shows you
plainly and directly
how you can speak English

-grammatically correct
-phonetically sound
-phrasally fluent
and
-tonally expressive

This course provides you
with
ample drills and exercises
to rid
your acquired old and unwanted habits
and re-form
your new and correct ways in spoken English
that
you and your friends can be proud of

1.      How is your English?

  -if you speak English

        -flatly, monotonously
-intermittently, word by word instead of phrase by phrase
       -uniformly, making no provision for strong/weak or long/short sounds;

 -if you speak English by direct translation from your thoughts in Chinese;

 -if you drop all or most of the consonant sounds, (middle or end-sound);

-if you find it easier understanding your local friends instead of native speakers;

-if your pronunciation shows no difference (where it should) between these (among hundreds of others) words:

bad

and

bed

pick

and

peak

fool

and

full

count

and

can’t

mission

and

vision

there

and

dare

three

free

and

fee

kill

keel

and

queue

fill

feel

and

few

Then, changes are you are speaking English‘a la Hong Kong style’.

This course can effectively help you rectify these problems.

2.      What went wrong?

An average child in Hong Kong spends over 20 continuous years learning English, with a result still far from satisfactory. Clearly, there must be something wrong either with the way English is being taught or the one teaching it. I firmly believe that in the case of Hong Kong, both counts are true.

3.      Arrangements:

 The class:

Basically, this is a personal couching of one-to-one situation, having said that, small classes (maximum 5 learners per class) can be arranged if and when desired.

 The session:

You may choose the length of a session according to your own needs:

60-minute session,
90-minute session or
120-minute session

The place:
You may designate your place of preference (your home? your office? etc.), alternately, we will agree on a place mutually acceptable.

The frequency/date/time:
Again, you may choose your own frequency/date/time of preference, as long as it doesn’t clash with my class-time.

The payment of fees:
No pre-payment of fees is required. You pay as each session ends and you are at liberty to discontinue our arrangement after any given session.

4.      Suited candidates:

-teachers of English (specially at Primary and Secondary levels)
-executives (at companies where a good spoken English counts)
-lovers of English language (wishing to brush up their English)
-students (Primary 3 and upward)

5.      I am

 Uncle Dominic

Why

International
Phonetic

Alphabet (IPA)?

English is not a ‘phonetic’ language, where constant sounds are applied to spelled words; therefore, a tool is needed to help us ‘pronounce’ each and every word in English. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is such a tool.

Unfortunately, IPA is not taught in Hong Kong schools as part of the official curriculum, this results in:

      -Hong Kong students not being able to use a dictionary as a pronouncing tool;

-Hearing different pronunciation for one word, Hong Kong students have no way to verify the right from the wrong, (majority of teachers being no help in this regards, as they themselves were brought up under a similar if not identical environment).

IPA improves and perfects your English pronunciation to become more conversant with your future professional and social encounters, as it helps you

-to phonetically pronounce all English words (100%)

-to read European languages
such as: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese etc. (95%)

-to read Romanized form of most Asian languages
such as: Japanese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Indian and Tagalog (95%)

-to read Putonghua pinyin (70%)

-to read Germanic and Russian lines of languages (30%)
